About Bev Jo and this blog:

I began this blog as a way to update our entire book, Dykes-Loving-Dykes: Dyke Separatist Politics for Lesbians Only online. Our book was published in Jan. 1990, so this is the 25 year update, completed in Jan. 2015.

I also began writing new articles, which, theoretically, if the money and time were available, would become second and third books. But for now, those articles are here and I will keep adding to them, as well as updating some of them.

I began a second blog with newer and theoretically shorter articles, but there’s so much to say!

Bio:  I’ve been a Lesbian from my earliest memories and am proud to be a Lesbian. Lesbians are my people and my blood. My life’s work has defending Lesbians and our culture and existence against those who oppress us. I’m working-class, ex-catholic, mostly European-descent (with some Native American ancestry), from the poverty class culture of my family.

I’m a Lifelong Lesbian, born near Cincinnati, Ohio in 1950. I became lovers with my first lover in 1968, became part of a Lesbian community in 1970, and became a Dyke Separatist in 1972. I helped create Radical Lesbian Feminist and Separatist community and worked on some of the earliest Lesbian Feminist projects, such as the Lesbian Feminist Conference in Berkeley in 1972 (one of the first in the world), the newspaper “Dykes and Gorgons” in 1973, the women’s bookstore and Lesbian coffeehouse, and taught self defense to women and girls. I’ve been published in journals and anthologies, including “For Lesbians Only,” “Finding the Lesbians,” “Lesbian Friendships,” “Amazones d’Hier, Lesbiennes Aujourd’hui,” “Mehr als das Herz Gebrochen,” the Journal for Lesbian Studies, Lesbian Ethics, Sinister Wisdom, Trivia, and Rain and Thunder.

With Linda Strega and Ruston, I co-wrote our book, “Dykes-Loving-Dykes: Dyke Separatist Politics for Lesbians Only” in 1990. I’ve been disabled since 1981 with ME/CFIDS (Myalgic Encephalomyelitis or Chronic Fatigue Immune Dysfunction Syndrome) or perhaps Lyme disease (who the hell knows) and MCS (Multiple Chemical Sensitivity.) I love nature and plants and animals — and especially the animals who are feared and hated and killed by people who don’t even know them, just as Lesbians are. I’ve learned to love rats especially, who I do not consider inferior to humans. I’m a spiritual atheist, but I’ve found out that there is definitely life after death because a little rat returned from the dead for three days to comfort us. These hated little animals are so kind and loving, and willing to die for someone they love. In our fight to protect the earth, distrust all “truths” we are taught by patriarchy, including by the “experts.” The true truth is often the opposite.

I tried to answer there, with this (below), but doubt they’ll print me. You did so well in answering all that crap. I keep seeing the same thing. I don’t know your class background, but I’m working class, and I keep seeing classism being used to shut us up or try to put us down — our politics called “absurd,” being told we need to read more. Typos are nothing. You wrote directly, clearly, and brilliantly, and Zane and his supporters really do not know how to answer you. You must be right because a real intersex person would understand, bond with you, share info, and also be outraged at the appropriation of your identity.

Have you written elsewhere, to get support?

This is what I tried to post at that blog:

Nicky is not being “rude” or “policing.” Rude is the patronizing way that Nicky has been talked down to. It’s also classist.

Nicky has good reason to question Zane because intersex identity is being regularly appropriated by men similarly to how men are appropriating women’s and Lesbian identity. Nicky’s “issue” is being oppressed for being an intersex person and by anyone appropriating intersex identity. I would think that if you were similarly intersex, you would not insult or try to drive Nicky off, but would ally and deeply understand why Nicky is questioning you.

This is not just about disagreements. Nicky’s identity is regularly being appropriated, as is mine, as a Lesbian and female. Appropriating someone’s identity is stealing, but also is an attempt to define others out of existence.

Nicky knows the extent to which this is happening and the harm it is doing. By responding as if Nicky just needs educating, you are ignoring the reality of this harm, and does make it look like Nicky is correct in assuming you are using the issue of intersex.

Yeap and every time I challenge a transgender person on their claims of intersex, I get hit with being called a bigot or transphobic for challenging their claims. I think to them that they believe that anyone who challenges them is being a bigot and they think that people don’t have the right to challenge them. Even though they like to think that they have the right to challenge women and intersex people at will.

It is so unfair. It’s so typical of the lying and stealing and then turning it all around. They are the bigots for not caring about your life and oppression. I always say, “We’re not phobic — they oppress us!” It’s so insulting. Calling us phobic compares us to those who are afraid of Intersex people and Lesbians. That’s appropriating/stealing again from Feminists who invented that as an idea to describe men like them. It’s all about them and their narcissism.

I really appreciate your courage and persistence, Nicky. No matter how much they lie, others will see. It’s obvious to anyone who cares.

It’s so unfair that they like to challenge women and intersex people at will and think that women and intersex people don’t have the right to challenge them. I challenged Zane on his so called intersex claim by asking simple questions that only an Intersex person would know and understand. It was very obvious that he wasn’t going to say or he was ducking the issue and instead calling me transphobic for challenging his claims. I knew he is an intersex imposter claiming to be intersex so he can get sympathy for why he’s trans. Zane thinks he can be both and think it’s possible to be both and tries to pass himself off as being both. Zane could not come up with one reason or the other but instead attacked me and bullied me. He even resorted to making a post to spew medical jargon to say why he’s a special snowflake.

I wonder what would happen if feminist and lesbians found out about Zane and what Zane has done to an intersex person.

It would be good for everyone to know. Is there a more public place that you can post about this, like at Gallus’? You’re doing such important work because it is so clear that Zane and his friends had absolutely no way to counter or answer you other than calling you names that are ridiculous and falling back on “we’re whoever we say we are.”

It doesn’t make sense, like you said, to claim to be both Intersex and transsexual. When they do, it’s a giveaway that they are men trying to con by claiming to be intersex. It’s as transparent as their extreme male-identified feminine look that screams “male!”

Yeap and people like Zane need to be called out for lying and con people by pretending to be intersex and pretending to be both. That’s because if people like Zane can lie and con people about being trans and intersex at the same time. Then they are not too far off at trying their luck at women as well.

It just proves that people like Zane are trying so hard to appropriate, steal and co-opt people’s identity and community. The fact that Zane got caught by an intersex person, just proves how bad they really are and how they are using their male privilege to steal other people’s identity.

I’m using this method to contact you. My name is Scott Norman Rosenthal.
I’ve led a dysfunctional life due to neuro-metabolic Hidden/Invisible Disability. I assure you that I’m quite rational. I was exposed to Feminism in the ’70’s.
I was quite close to a trans couple. They disowned me for standing against the drugging of children and the eroding of Women’s Sports. Also for pointing out the facts about last summer’s looting.
Many trans are connected with the violent elements that control Antifa. This couple have lied to me for years about many things. There is something frightening going on here in Vermont. I’d like to communicate with you. Among other things, they’ve taken control of Liberty Union Party.
I’ve found a couple of your articles to be quite lucid and enlightening.
I believe that people need to know about what is happening here in VT.

People will figure out who people like Zane are all about.

I think that people like Zane are co-opting and stealing people’s identity, just so they can get the same sympathies that Real Intersex people and Real women get. It just shows that people like Zane was stupid enough to try an lie and con their way pass an intersex person and couldn’t get pass an a Real Biological born intersex person, when confronted and challenged on their claims.

    Hi Bev,

I’m trying to write a book criticizing mainstream feminism and in it I defend lesbian feminism and separatism. One of the most important things is to point out how lesbian feminists and separatists exist all over the globe since people say they are only middle class white women. I was wondering if you knew how I could find works written by women outside of the U.S and U.K, or if you could help me get in touch with some lesbian feminists or separatists who wouldn’t mind answering a few questions.

I don’t just want to make a point, but I really want to learn how women from cultures outside of these countries I know fairly well (U.S and U.K) came to these conclusions within their own countries or cultures. I want to write this for other women who might feel as though separatism isn’t something that women discover in all kinds of circumstances. Women who, like me, aren’t very active on the internet (hence the choice to write a book).

This lesbian feminist from Japan had a website along time ago, this is actually the only website I could find from someone outside of the U.S, U.K. (Other than one of the authors of your book I have not seen anyone from Australia or New Zealand, and I have not seen anyone from Canada either–and English is the only language I speak at the moment.) https://web.archive.org/web/20040622090123/http://plaza28.mbn.or.jp/~dyke/mo/lesfemi_mo_shiro_eng.html

It is SO important to let all women know that Lesbian Separatism is not privileged politics. I have seen the lies for decades and they serve the men who want to keep their women in line and under their control, and they serve the women who don’t want to be questioned about their own privileges and alliances to men. They repeat the ridiculous myth that Separatists live on land, in the country, etc. I’ve probably been a Separatist longer than anyone I know and it’s a maddening lie that erases us.

It’s Separatist politics that created and fueled all forms of feminism, including our women only spaces to be together, which are so crucial and which benefited even anti-Separatists.

I think we have no idea what is going on among more oppressed Lesbians. Like how many know that there is an African-descent Lesbian-only organization in the SF Bay Area that has been having events for decades?

I have a question I’d like to ask you, when you say ex-het lesbians, do you mean any lesbian who for any reason had sexual contact with a man/men? Do you specifically mean bisexual/heterosexual women that choose to exclusively pursue women? Or do you mean women that came out late in life?

    Liked by 1 person

  17. Bev Jo says:

By ex-het, we mean Lesbians who chose heterosexuality in the past. Not all Lesbians who came out late have been het, but most were. Women currently choosing to be het or bisexual who are targeting/preying on Lesbians are a whole other issue and oppress us. But most Lesbians have been het and are fully Lesbian now, though there are differences that we explain in our book, particularly in chapters 2 and 3.

I’m still confused by this, would “chose heterosexuality” refer to women who have done that to any degree for example? Does this include exclusively homosexual women who tried to be men due to homophobia and pressure, for example? Would it also include women who came out young but had some kind of interactions with men prior? I can’t tell if there is a distinction being made here between women who were at some point attracted to men, and thus acted on that, but now identify as lesbians as opposed to women who were never attracted to men but due to specific circumstances had been with one. Could you refer me to the book where I can see this defined in detail?

      • An says:

A, you have to realize that attraction and internal feelings are almost impossible to analyze and categorize fully. It is too personal. Heterosexuality is an institution you either participate in to varying degrees or not. It is a liberal and patriarchal con to reduce sexuality to mere internal desire. It makes much more sense to include and analyze women’s actions as Lesbians rather than primarily center a woman’s “true” feelings or her ideals. Because like I said, they are impossible to confirm. I know women who claim to be lesbians, are partnered with men and will continue to partner with men, because it is about “attraction” only. They see no contradiction in being a wife and bearing his children and having girlfriends as a lesbian on the side. And like Bev said, these types play the biggest victim and act like real oppression is not patriarchy but other lesbians who won’t except their current and past het BS. Now you can claim they are not “real” and full of shit, but how would you? What would be the determining variable if not the BEHAVIOR? Reducing Lesbianism to mere sexual attraction is like how hets simplify the institution of heterosexuality to “love.” It only benefits those in power.

Thank you so much. I so agree. The women choosing to be bisexual by being intimate with men but still using Lesbians for all we give them that men never will but then calling themselves “Lesbians” is appropriation of us, our love, our culture, support, etc. These are likely women who would never call themselves “Lesbians” until it became trendy. And then of course they are in some ways on a continuum with men claiming to be Lesbians, though of course they could choose to be (which men never can.)

Our book is almost entirely here: https://bevjoradicallesbian.wordpress.com/
though we also have hard copies. It’s been erased from libraries though.

    Here’s Chapter Two: https://bevjoradicallesbian.wordpress.com/2017/09/08/chapter-two-heterosexualityselling-out-is-not-compulsory-2/

I really hate the term “homosexual women” since we said no to that almost 50 years ago because, like with “gay,” it aligns us with our oppressors, gay men, and we are very different.

Also, most of the women I know who want to be men are Fem and many are het or bisexual and want sexual access to gay men. They have been under far less pressure than many of us who would never want to become our oppressor, even if it were possible. I think it’s more that they wanted male privilege as opposed to being oppressed as Lesbians. I’ve heard some saying they want “better jobs and more chicks.” But I answer about that in my later articles at my blogs.

We used “ex-het” to define the vast majority of Lesbians who chose to be with men, regardless of their attraction to males. My concern is more for that Lesbians they harm and what het/male attitudes they bring into our lives and beds. No all, of course, but many bring sado-masochistic and Lesbian-hating attitudes into relationships with Lesbians without even thinking about it.
Lesbian communities have had workshops in “Unlearning” many issues, like racism and classism, but never “Unlearning Heterosexuality.” So many ex-het Lesbians still get privilege for their past choosing men, which is why so many refer to their past husbands and boyfriends even when it was decades ago.

Part of the problem with stopping the heterosexism is that ex-het Lesbians both brag and play victim, saying they are more oppressed than the Never-het or Lifelong Lesbians they are oppressing.

Thank you, Bev Jo. I’m looking forward to a good long read.

I’m spending so much time these days just telling younger women that a whole universe of brilliant feminist and lesbian feminist culture existed in their lifetimes; that we, and our foremothers, fought for rights and inclusions that the younger women don’t even know had to *be* fought for (but they’re learning now: abortion/reproductive decision-making, illegal); that, for a time, we laid patriarchy bare, examined it closely, and understood why women’s lives are structured, constrained, and controlled as they are.

And that all of this work has been overwritten, co-opted, commodified so as to be rendered meaningless, lied about, redefined, and mocked.

And that this precise process has recurred repeatedly, after every feminist movement, throughout patriarchal history, so that we have to search for it, over and over.

Many thanks for keeping it alive and present, against the current tidal wave of male dominance, once again.

I hope you can extend so that you can also produce comic books, music, video games, series, companies for it and such, founded with all the knowledge you have presented in your book/chapters. Today again all media is male-ruled and they don’t allow truth, no misandrism. But I want now since years to create misandristic stuff and want to become money for it to live. It feels divine to imagine put the oppressors in there right place. So for the glory of females and intersex, let us spin harm and death to all male.

The censorship is terrible, considering Janice is a well-known published author. One of our chapters had been included in a German anthology years ago: Mehr als das Herz Gebrochen.

Even the triple hate crime murder of two Lesbians and their son by a pornographer man claiming to be a Lesbian is censored in our news here (his pedophile book is still sold on Amazon.)

I appreciate the support but you have no idea who I am that I could “produce” anything when even basic survival is a problem. So again, if anyone want to do it, contact me. My concern is to keep our book available, which seems impossible. These men and their women followers have massive power.

I would ask you to rethink mentioning “intersex” specifically considering they are a tiny percentage and that is the term that the het and other men use to manipulate women into supporting them. It’s much more important to not add to their power, even if well-intentioned. And why not focus more on Lesbians who are being constantly erased and murdered?

I reported a man who identifies as a woman several years ago, what it cost me to be named a TERF and everything you already know…

I have known your work for approximately a year. How did I live so many years without knowing you and knowing about your career, your relentless criticism and your texts?

I want to tell you that I feel honored and moved by every word I read on your blog. I am not an English speaker but I have been making an effort to translate everything I read on this blog… I was able to get the book “For lesbian only” on Amazon, where reading you has been a lifesaver. Especially now that the “lesbian” women with whom I have shared in recent years are returning with men, are getting pregnant or generating violence against lesbians in the intimate, private and public spheres.

I find myself isolated, experiencing the hatred and erasure that heterosexual women exert on me. I am talking above all about women who have been heterosexual and then become lesbians, occupy lesbian spaces, take the central voice, appoint themselves as lesbian leaders, while exercising very cruel violence against lesbians like me, who have been lesbian since that I have memory. Sometimes I feel defeated, alone and very sad. I wonder if no one else will see that? And then I read you and things seem to make sense, so I’m really glad you exist, I say that with complete sincerity. Thank you thank you thank you.

I would like to know if I could write you a letter in the future (via email or right here on your blog, I wouldn’t want to seem invasive or anything like that).

I greet you from a distance.

(Note: I have helped myself to a translator for this text.)

Thank you SO much. I so appreciate and agree with all that you said and wish we could meet and you could feel less alone. We are all over the world, but it can be so hard to find each other. Do you feel like you can say the country you’re in?

I’ll answer more privately by email, but it’s fine to keep writing here too….

      xoxo
      Bev

Hi, I want to ask about a different website what you think of this place.
I found a website that is splitted in two but just called The L Chat. There is thelchat.net and thelchat.tapatalk. It’s easy to write as a guest on the tapatalk one and the other is protected by cloudflair and every time I visit the side my IP is permabanned (never write there). So the tapatalk one has many topics but also many comments that more center on insulting butches or women as “polilezzes” (politcal lesbians).
Do you think the purpose of this website is more trashy? I think there is no real free speech because when I wrote about parents, father (nuclear family) and that we don’t need more sons I get bans. But they let anti-trans comments as long as the targets are TiF or mothers of TiMs and there is a thread there. But I cannot change the feeling that there are mostly right wing men and women that let there opinions out. There are threads open that could be filled with male trolls while others that could catch the interest of lesbians are closed or death moderated by a (maybe male) mod.
What do you think when you see this website?
And can you recommend one where women can be really open to say what’s true but not mainstream?

      Do we know each other?

I have no idea about these sites and don’t have the time to explore any. I did look at your first link and the logo alone is vile so why go further? If that is how they advertise themselves, then that tells us who they are. Yes, likely men, men pretending to be Lesbians, or male/het-identified Lesbians.

I don’t really know where else I’d recommend. I interact with Lesbians and Radical Feminists mostly on facebook. But also more are getting Substack accounts and that’s a way to interact. I like Eva Kurilova’s site.

Hi. I don’t know another website but know that mods on the tapatalk version ban or delete comments quick if they don’t like the content. I don’t go to the website anymore because it doesn’t make any sense to answer a guest then get per ban or the answer gets deleted. The tapatalk version could be moderated by males only, some trannies. They allow shittalk against actresses and women, also bdsm, kinky, porn supporting comments are allowed.

Many commenters could be the same male mods. When they hate on trans/nonbinary or butches in the transsexual thread for example I understand why you think they could be right wing. Mayb they are. Hope you can find a better place that welcomes you. Don’t waste your time with this board.

I don’t have the time or interest to go to websites for the most part. But I have to respond that “hating on” trans/people pretending to be the other sex and “non-binary” who are connected, is completely understandable and has nothing to do with Butches who are real Lesbians who don’t obey male rules of fake femininity. That alone doesn’t mean someone is right wing.

I visited this site and think the bad thing with this websites – not only this Lchat website – is that they look at first sign to be for lesbians but are mostly moderated by males or bisex mothers in my experience too. I have a test for other lesbians that want to know if a website is lesbian friendly. Simply write that “males need to be controled and reduced, until then women can be free and women need to connect with each other first – as enemies we can’t win”. Or similar. On the L chat board I tried similar stuff. I mentioned the lack of female friendship in popular and even non popular media and answered some other users that the Lchat website doesn’t allow free speech for women. I wrote if you write something against men or male ideology then your comments get deleted and you are banned.
And while answering another user I saw that my comments got deleted and I was permanently banned. I just think at all the women that really want a place for themselves and connect with each other but then only such trash gossip websites are online, where they are censored and banned just because a male or straight woman mod didn’t liked their opinion. I did a own free forum but it’s hard to get a good place to advertise it for the target group. Many websites ‘for lesbians’ are filled with males or nervous mothers. I don’t like that either. In reality it’s hard to find each other and online too, because of this people.

Happy New Year! I have read your blog and am very surprised at how radical many things are. But the world has unfortunately not improved for women and animals despite various feminist movements e.g. there is still pornography and even beauty contests for girls in liberal countries. In Germany we don’t have a radical blog, everything is full of trannies and liberals. If that’s ok with you, I’ll just translate your texts to make them more accessible to a german readership on a german site. After it’s done, I want to link you the website here. For now I don’t know if it will work on a free wordpress site because of censorship. We will see.
    Best Regards
    Rossum

Thank you so much! Things had been much more hopeful once, but so much as to do with money and privilege. I would love to reprint our book, for instance, to make it more available, as well as my more recent articles, which could be two more books, plus be able to support and help other Radical Lesbian Feminists. A friend is translating our book into Spanish right now also.

I can’t understand why feminists not came up with a organized plan to erase male life yet. How many female beings need to suffer and die until we reach the level to build our own nation? Will this neve happen, or only in fantasy? We have so many explanations now why men torture and kill us. There are many males alive and free to torture us as they wish. This needs to stop, but it seems no feminists, even not those that say males are genetical evil, want to make their hands dirty of a very needed genocide. I don’t understand this, why I am the only one that sees what needs to be done so we as females (including other female animals) can live a much better life without males hunting, selling, killing us?
We need to make a cleansing-plan how every woman and girl on this planet, yes even the weakest ones, gets the chance to kill males successfully.
It’s so frustrating, sad, boring and crazy that males are free, who stops them soon? I don’t want to wait anymore for no change, I want the biggest evolution in our history, the full downfall of Patriarchy. This is the only war worth fighting for.

This seems odd to me. Why haven’t you done this? Who do you expect to do it?

What makes more sense is why do women keep reproducing since that is destroying the earth? When some of us first talked about this, it could have happened by now. And we explained in our book why women want to keep reproducing as well as being with men. Privilege. They deny it, but it’s glaring…
